BOSTON, MA – Boston University’s men’s ice hockey team has come under scrutiny after being accused of has upholding a “sexual entitlement” culture and abusing alcohol.
A task force was set up to investigate the team after two BU hockey players were charged with sexual assault, one in December 2011 and the other in February 2012.
However, criminal charges against former player Max Nicastro, who was accused of rape, were dropped. Corey Trivino ended up pleading guilty to sexual assault.
The task force found that the team’s “elevated social status” on campus led to “frequent sexual encounters with women absent an emotional relationship or ongoing commitment.”
It also claims the culture upheld by the team arose from their isolation, which has also led to their alcohol and substance abuse problem.
“It is clear that excessive alcohol consumption has played a role in the majority of the instances of alleged sexual assault or other inappropriate behavior that have been identified through the work of the Task Force,” stated university president Robert Brown.
Following the troubling findings, BU announced that head hockey coach Jack Parker would be removed from his position as Executive Athletic Director and will now only focus on his coaching duties.
